The Business of Church

Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” (Matthew 21:12-13 & Luke 19:45-46).

The above verses are over two separate occasions when Jesus clears the temple. Maybe it’s because we’re so dense and we tend to turn the church from a house of prayer into a place of business.

Please hear me when I say to you that I am not upset, angry, or bitter.

I must apologize that I have believed these facts and figures as truth.

After working for a Christian business I booked over 300+ events with pastors and churches across the country. I got to personally know over 100 speakers and comedians. I loved being able to fuel my heart for ministry. A few things I came to learn VERY quickly was this:

*Almost 100% of all church websites had white males on their staff.

*The minimum price churches paid for a male speaker was $2,500 ranging all the way up to $15,000.

*The maximum price churches paid for a woman speaker was $1,500. I booked less than 15 events for women because the average budget for women’s ministry is $500.

*Not one of the events I booked was for 20-somethings, which is what I am most passionate about.

I also need to apologize for thinking that I could only serve the church in one position. When I was single I thought it was because I was single. Now that I’m married I see it’s neither.

God wants to use the gifts He has given us no matter if we’re male, female, single and/or married. Fact.

I don’t know if I’m out of line by saying this, but I am almost relieved that I’m no longer phased by these stats. Because for the first time in a long time the church can’t be a place of business. The church is no longer the consumer. It has become once again a house of prayer.

It is my desire to continue to speak passionately and reach out to young adults, but one thing God has had to show me is that my worth is in Him–not how many books I write, speaking events I book, or churches I speak at.

No matter if another church invites me to speak at their church–I’m being obedient to the ministry God has called me too.

It is my heart and desire that you can say the same thing too!

Don’t let your relationship status or gender deter you from serving the Lord with ALL your heart, mind, soul, and strength!

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” (Revelation 3:8)

I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with these struggles. At least you know where true value is found. :)

This really is the struggle that authors face, as you want to impact people… which means sales in part. However, the money issue always creeps in. I’ve been so grateful for the prayer time at my small group. Based on my requests, I can usually get a good sense of whether I’m defining myself by my work or by the ways I’m drawing near to God.

    Thanks Renee!

@Jason – it’s okay. Thanks for your concern!

@Ed – exactly. The more time I obey God, the more God opens my eyes to ministry (and it’s not always sales or money or bookings. I am most thankful for this).

I hate to say it, but I have known this truth for awhile. It is sad, but it has personally propelled me to seek the Lord and His approval/acceptance of me rather than people and ministries. It also made me make the decision to attend a small local church that are actually serving and giving. I am not 20 something but 45 and it took me awhile to come this understanding. But I am glad I did, as I am free to pursue the Lord and please Him.

Amen, Pilar. I actually wrote an article on this and can’t wait to share it when it becomes available.

Wow…I had known this stuff about women’s ministry but seeing it here makes it more real. Does that make sense? I’m glad you continuing to serve no matter what and be obedient to what God has called you. Lately, God has been shouting and whispering through many people to me: don’t give up! Being obedient to God is more important anyway, right?

@Becky – And I am glad that you are doing what God has called you to do!

Renee: I am currently a stay at home mom with 2 precious babies. When I was single, I faced a little opposition, but figured it would vanish upon becoming married. Nope-wrong! Now as a young mom, I sometimes face opposition when I minister to those outside of my home. Or some of the precious saints around me have *gasped* when I told them I wanted to attend a much needed woman’s retreat away from my babies. Yes, I know my babies and husband are a critical priority, but Jesus never said “everybody but young mothers go and make disciples etc.” Thus, I have progressed from being told “don’t minister to much or you will miss your husband”, to “don’t minister to much or your kids will become heathens.” For goodness sake! Truth: God, through His Grace, can choose to use me as a tired, cheerio covered young mommy if it will bring Him glory. :) Amen? Thanks for letting me share a different perspective…blessings.

@Tracy – THANK YOU for sharing your perspective. I have attended churches that have placed a higher value on women ONLY staying at home and home schooling. Not that there is anything wrong because I was home schooled, but you know what I mean.

I just want to know how I get between $2500 & $15,000 for a speaking engagement!!!

On another front…..You’re right on! This is so very true. The politics of church business are real and messed up. My grandfather often says he is sure that God will be confused about the thing we call church when He returns. I know I’ve made plenty of mistakes as a pastor….Many of us will have tons to answer for….I just pray that God doesn’t have to as me about under utilizing the gifts of the men & WOMEN He had placed in my church and in my life!

@Michael – haha thanks for sharing about your grandfather!!
