Back to Basics

back-to-basics

[Editor’s note: Rochelle is back! Instead of her beautiful poetry this time, she’s got a back to basics devotional on falling in love with God to share!]

Do you remember?

Do you remember when you first fell in love with someone? You spent every moment thinking about your love for them. You looked forward to those 3-5 hour phone calls. When you weren’t able to speak to them, you would reflect over text messages and listen to all the voicemails. I surely did.

Do you remember the dates and the intriguing conversations that you embraced so much? You remember those journals you wrote in about every moment that you wanted to hold near to your heart.

Do you remember sharing breathtaking moments you had with the one you love with those who were close to you? You wanted others to know how much you loved the guy you were dating. You didn’t care about the naysayers because you followed your heart. You professed your love even when it made you look weird. Your eyes would light up with joy, because you knew they were the one for you.

Do you remember when you first came to Christ and knew of His love for you?

I remember when God first became my EVERYTHING. He became my friend, my peace, my comforter, my joy, my protector, my father, my healer, my deliverer and so much more. When I learned that He saw fit to sacrifice His son, Jesus Christ for my life, I knew that was REAL love.  I could barely wait to sit in His sweet and holy presence. I yearned for His word; His promises. I couldn’t refrain from sharing of His goodness and how He saved me. I wanted Him more than I needed man. I wasn’t afraid to cry before Him. If loving God was a sin that was one sin I was willing to commit, on a regular basis. I loved Him with all of my being.

Do you remember when you first fell in love with God?

As you reflect over your first time, evaluate if you’ve made any changes that may have brought you closer to Him or further away from His love for you.

Let’s get “Back to the Basics” with our love for God!

Scriptures to Reflect on:

  • Mark 12:30 NLT: “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with your entire mind and with all your strength.”

  • Psalms 18: 1-3 NLT: “I love you, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.”

  • Ephesians 6:24 NLT: “May God’s grace be eternally upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.”
